It is responsible for red kidney bean poisoning, which results from eating raw or undercooked kidney beans. According to the Food and Drug Administration FDAconsuming just four raw kidney beans could cause symptoms such as severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
If a person has enzymes that do not function correctly, consuming excess lectins may lead to nutrient deficiencies and digestive problems. This is because the body cannot break down lectins. Instead, they bind to nutrients and the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract. However, lectins often attach to carbohydrates and leave the body before they can cause harmful effects. The book leaned towards having the reader focus on consuming more plant-based products over animal protein for optimal health. The book discusses many mainstream issues that can hold the dieter back from weight loss and health. According to Dr. Gundry, taking statins and drugs for high blood pressure can actually do more harm than good. This diet book contains 70 different healthy recipes to follow, tips and tricks to help you stay on course with the program, as well as a meal planner to organize your meals daily.
The first phase lasts for a total of six weeks. In this phase, the dieter will focus on consuming healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, and clean protein sources.
Leaving out grains and sugars is key. It is not until the end of the six weeks that you can incorporate grains and sugars back into your diet. This phase is supposed to kick start your weight loss in preparation for the other two phases. The second phase is the restoration phase, this phase transitions the dieter from eating healthy fats and dense foods to consuming lighter and lower in calorie foods. You will start on this phase of the diet during week seven and continue until week twelve.
The goal here is to slowly taper down on animal protein and grains. Replacing those with a more permanent plant-based diet. This phase is supposed to restore your diet habits moving forward, for the long term.
The final phase of the program is supposed to be permanent. If you cannot guess what the diet consists of, it is purely vegetables! It is recommended at the beginning to eat animal protein the size of your palm and gradually move to smaller amounts from there.
Beige and white foods are forbidden, as well as certain fruits that are higher in sugar. For example, mangoes, pineapple, and most tropical fruits.
All You Need to Know About the Dr. Gundry Diet Plan
This diet is promoting a plant-based diet, which is by no means dangerous. However, it is not for everyone. Lack of essential protein can be somewhat alarming, and unhealthy too for the body. On the flip side, getting too much protein from animal sources has been said to be unhealthy due to the high amounts of fat present.He did his surgical residency at the University of Michigan and then was chosen to participate in a research program run by the National Institutes of Health.
He says his stint at NIH is where his love of research began. Gundry pioneered the use of robots for minimally-invasive heart surgery and was one of the first surgeons to implant an artificial heart.
He is also well-known for performing infant and pediatric heart transplants and has done many charitable missions in China, India and Zimbabwe. InGundry gave up practicing medicine and opened The Center for Restorative Medicine where he advocates using diet to improve the health, weight and energy of his patients.
Gundry has published a few books on nutrition, including The Plant Paradox which spent several weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. His ideas have been criticized by the wider medical community as pseudoscience. Gundry has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media.
In plants, lectins are believed to protect against insect attacks. While eating raw beans can cause serious illness, the idea that all lectins are bad for human consumption is not generally accepted as true.

Gundry, however, disagrees and says lectins pose a major health risk, causing a laundry list of problems, from inflammation to heart disease to cancer to depression. It is high in vegetables and low in animal protein and fruit, and grains are avoided completely.
Gundry himself eats mostly vegan during the week, and has fish on the weekends. He also tends to skip breakfast and sometimes lunch too, which adds up to intermittent fasting. He has published a cookbook of lectin-free recipes and also has an extensive supplement line. This phase must be followed strictly for at least 2 weeks. During this time, all grains, starchy vegetables, and sugar including fruit are eliminated.
The focus is on eating protein, non-starchy vegetables and healthy fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, nuts and avocados.
This phase is designed to kick-start weight loss. During the second phase, you switch over from foods that are high in calories to those that are low in calories. This phase is meant to make a permanent change in your eating habits. It involves eating a lot of leafy greens, and less animal protein, cheese, grains and legumes. This phase may last weeks, but Gundry recommends staying in this phase until you hit your ideal weight.
Plants were what they mainly had and they were eaten raw. Animal protein was not always available for our ancestors, and so meat is only eaten occasionally. Cultivated grains did not exist, and those are to be avoided. Fruit is also to be eaten only in moderation and if it is in season. On the list to be avoided are mangoes, pineapple, grapes, and dried fruit. Casein is a type of milk protein. A2 casein comes from French cows such as Jersey and Limousin.

It is an analysis from the database of nurses and physicians followed by the Harvard School of Public Health relating habits like eating potato chips, poor sleep, and lack of exercise to long-term weight gain.
No measurement of the microbiome was performed. No measurements of genes were performed either and the reference fails to support the statement in the book. Indeed, eating fruit was associate with maintenance of a more ideal body weight, a point to consider below. Bad form Dr. One more reference early in the book might make you wonder about the authenticity of the research in The Longevity Paradox.
Except the study was not in humans and did not conclude that with that statement. The study was performed in nematodes, or worms, 1 mm in length, that are used for basic science experiments. We also showed that signaling pathways that affect longevity can have more or less of an impact depending on the diet worms are fed. Our study illustrates the importance that the microbiome can have on influencing life expectancy.
Again, shoddy, if not shitty, research again. As a final note, I challenged Dr. Gundry to his face about the errors that abounded in The Plant Paradox and he responded that a Harvard student was paid to do it and had made errors.
He never released a corrected version of that book and he has learned nothing in the process. Shame, shame Dr.
